Summer holidays are in full swing and we’re taking advantage of every opportunity to spend quality time with the littles; beach trips, Disneyland (a favourite in this family!), rediscovering classic tourist spots, local parks or even just around town running errands - and food on the go is a real trap for waste!
There are plenty of eco-friendly food packaging options these days, but not too many are kid-friendly. Here at Petit Tippi we’ve done loads of testing on our toddlers and babies, and we’ve compiled our favourites for you!
We, at Petit Tippi, are a big supporter of Baby Led Weaning, where you let babies try foods in their natural state - cooked or raw - to develop appreciation for food’s natural colours, shapes and tastes. We use EZPZ mini mats at home and they are the perfect size for all types of high chairs. They also fit nicely in purses and/or diaper bags so it’s great to take to restaurants too (no need to worry about breakable plates being chucked off the table by your overzealous kiddo...please tell me we’re not the only ones!).
When we pack our day’s fruits, snacks, and meals to-go we use our Yumbox: It’s a leak-proof (yes, even yogurt and sauces) bento box which you can use to pack up to 6 different kinds of snacks or foods in kid-sized portions all in one container. For older kids in school there is a 4 compartment option that fits a sandwich or main alongside a couple of fun and healthy snacks. I am on a mandated gluten free diet for the time being, so I bring lunch to work in a Yumbox and it’s perfect!
Another fun option for sandwiches and snacks is Planet Wise’s collection of zippered or velcro closure bags and wraps in all sorts of great designs. We love the new donuts print! They are all double-layered for leak-proof, light-weight and hygienic food to go, and can be washed by hand or in the machine.
When our baby first started solids and was on purées, we packed a pouch filled with lovingly homemade purée in a reusable pouch, packed with an Avanchy bamboo + silicon infant spoon in an AppleCheeks Minizip for the perfect little meal packet on the go.
And let’s not forget the straws! Stainless Steel straws are all the rage these days, but for kids we’ve found a much friendlier option: silicone, made by SiliKids in fun colours and 3 different lengths for different sized cups so the whole family can enjoy! There's even an extra-wide straw for smoothies and bubble tea!
Waste is inevitable, and it's especially hard as a family, not to mention when you have little ones! But, it's not impossible to avoid it, and by preparing and making sure you have the right products for your families needs, it can be done. With all these items we are able to avoid a huge amount of to-go waste, and in turn live more sustainably. Even if one can't do all these things, implementing one or two of these products into your routine will massively impact the amount of waste you produce. Take it from us, if we can do it so can you!
